At first glance, two screws may look alike. But look at the tip. One is sharply pointed. The other resembles a miniature drill bit. That small difference defines their entire purpose.
Self-Tapping Screws
The sharp, pointed tip is designed to tap its own threads into a pre-drilled hole. You must drill a pilot hole first. Then, as you drive the sharp tail screw, its threads cut into the material, creating a secure hold. These screws work well with softer substrates like wood, thin plastic, and light-gauge metals. They do not remove material — they displace it.
Self-Drilling Screws
The tip looks like a twist drill. This integrated drill point cuts and removes material as it spins. The screw creates its own hole, then immediately follows with threading action. No pre-drilling is required. Drill tail screws are ideal for harder materials, especially thicker steel and metal roofing panels. They are designed to drill through metal, not just tap into it.
How to choose
If your material is soft and you can pre-drill, a sharp tail screw is fine. If you are fastening thick metal or don’t want an extra drilling step, a drill tail screw is the correct tool for the job. Neither is better overall — each fits a specific fastening need.
Know the tail, pick the right screw for your material.
